aside from the stick of cigarette that valerio is sniffing for the past couple of minutes, the only thing keeping him warm amidst the chilliness of shoal cave is his charizard's flame. the redhead knows he needs to get his hands on the reward money after seeing how much the city council would compensante for locating the missing mossdeep locals.[break][break]

and apparently, he is not the only one who finds the sum of cash alluring.[break][break]

Sterling isn’t a hero. Really, the only reason he’s out here in the cold is because of the money reward. Otherwise, he would have said fuck it and left the locals to their fate- whatever that may be. But it’s a generous reward, and he could always use the extra money.

Which had led him to this. Specifically, the fact that he was freezing his ass off and trying not to wrinkle his nose at the smell of the cigarette. The Growlithe sitting at his feet wasn’t enough to keep him warm, so his hands were in his pockets instead to keep some semblance of warmth. He knows when to answer when he’s spoken to, though, so he lifts a hand in an awkward, halfhearted wave.

”Hi.” For a second, he debates playing it off like he’s looking for these locals out of the kindness of his heart, but he’ll probably never see this other trainer again. ”I guess you could say that. Mostly, I’m just after the reward.” He huffs out a laugh, as if that will take away from the harshness of what he had said.

He’s not entirely sure if being interesting is a good thing or not, but he assumes that doesn’t matter for the time being. What does matter is the reward – or saving people, if he had wanted to go the hero route. Which he doesn’t. Really, he can’t understand why people would risk their necks for someone who probably won’t even thank them.

At least going in it for the reward gave him something to look forward to. He pushes those thoughts away just in time to introduce himself. ”Sterling Matthews. Nice to meet you.” It seemed he had good luck, too, because the second the words left his mouth, their introduction was interrupted by people yelling for help.

”Ready whenever you are.” He snaps his fingers at the Growlithe to get her attention before he’s walking to stand at the entrance of the cave.

The redhead had already voiced his thoughts, but Sterling really hopes the reward is worth whatever they’ll find in the cave.

sterling matthews. valerio is pretty sure he has heard the name before, a name which is a staple in many households. the problem is dachev is not a household: it is a relic, long buried in the history of galar, that does not care for celebrities since they have no televisions. not to mention that valerio is the last of his kin.[break][break]

as they move deeper, the screams are getting louder and crisper. they send chills as the redhead finds his way into the tunnels that sprawl in the cavern, but it is the long silence that follos that truly haunts him.[break][break]

If the other man recognizes his name, he doesn’t show it, and Sterling has to push down some odd mixture of relief and disappointment. He doesn’t even know why he’s disappointed- being known could just mean more work for him, and that’s the last thing he wanted. Still, he would have thought he was a bigger name than that…

That’s not his problem now, though. What is his problem is the fact that this man, Jonathan, thinks that the one causing all the trouble is a Froslass, and he only has one fire type Pokemon. One he doesn’t particularly care to lose, either. Judging from the Charizard, though, he supposes there’s not too much to worry about. And his Growlithe seems ready for whatever’s ahead- more than Sterling is, anyways.

”I hope there’s just one.” It’s not quite a confession that the screams are unnerving, but it comes close. They get louder as the two get closer, but the following silence almost makes Sterling ask the man if he wants to turn around and get a nice reward some other way. He moves to shove his hands in his pockets, praying that Jonathan just assumes he’s shaking from the cold alone.

valerio could care less about his companion's opinion as they descend further. besides, if things get messy, he's sure hoon can handle it pretty well. and if not, he has his entire dragon herd to make up for it.[break][break]

reaching a familiar bridge of ice, they can finally see the rest of the rescuers having a heated battle with the winte beast at their presence. sterling is lucky that his wish has been granted: there is only one abomasnow receiving all of the attacks, but it is powerful enough to fend them all off.[break][break]

when one team attempts to lunge to the creature, they are easily frosted with the creature's breath, petrified in a rock of ice like rest of the missing locals displayed at the center as the pièce de résistance.[break][break]

”Well, I only have one fire type with me.” It’s spoken with bit of a laugh, although an awkward one. Of course, there are the rest of his Pokemon, but Begonia is the only one that would have the biggest chance of helping. Once the silence falls between them, he’s more than eager to let it stay that way- it’s easier to talk himself out of leaving if he has to speak up first.

Once they reach the bridge, though, there’s no turning back, and he realizes that with a sinking feeling. He probably could, and leave Jonathan to deal with this on his own, but he would just feel worse than ever if he did that. Damn his morals- sure, this stranger seems more than capable of dealing with it, but Sterling doesn’t want to take that risk in case he was wrong. Besides, he’s already here, and the sooner they get this over with the sooner he can rest.

And holy shit, is he going to avoid any actual action for a long time.

”I guess so.” He grins when he says it, hoping it’ll hide the fact that he wants to get the hell out of dodge. ”I think they should pay us more for cleaning up this mess.” Instead of speaking again, he moves to ruffle Begonia’s fur in something supposedly comforting. He doesn’t know if the Growlithe is half as anxious as he is, but he’s inwardly apologizing to her either way.
